We devote this issue to information about the upcoming OR Manager Conference, October 2–4 in Orlando, Florida, because we believe that this conference is critically important, for us, for our healthcare industry clients, and the Directors of Surgical Services and others we associate with every day.
We are all inundated with opportunities to leave our daily work and its struggles, stresses, and rewards for a bit for professional development; yet most conferences will turn out to be marginally relevant. The OR Manager Conference, however, is the one great opportunity for all of us—leaders in perioperative services, those pursuing leadership roles, and we recruiters who match candidates to the most fulfilling job opportunities—to step back and see the big picture, to connect deeply with others, and to learn about the best practices, trends, and future of surgical services. This is the conference that is the most finely tuned to the day-to-day work of perioperative leaders, with impressive sessions that will speak to all of us, teach us, and inspire us. For those who work in surgical services, the OR Manager Conference provides a chance to interact and be recognized on a national level by peers and by those who hire OR managers and directors. This networking is especially crucial now when there’s a 30 percent vacancy rate for Directors of Surgical Services, and the average tenure for these Directors is 18 months. You never know when you’re going to meet your next boss or make that connection that will guide your career path—and this is an environment where that could happen.
And Whitman Partners will be there! We’ll be in the Exhibit Hall, we’ll be organizing events, and we’ll most definitely be attending sessions to enhance our understanding of the issues that face perioperative leaders. We are looking forward to finally meeting the many people we’ve interacted with only on the phone or by email and making those connections more meaningful. During the three days in Orlando, we’ll be able to sit down together to discuss job openings, job search strategies, and long-term career objectives.
